Short video review of my favorite home workout

I think I said “dozens of pushups” in there when I meant pull-ups. Pushups haven’t been my weakness, pull-ups have.

Another thing that struck me about how my strength has changed recently, is that I was over at my parents the other night. They just moved and still have stuff in boxes that need to get moved to storage. And my dad wanted my help. So he was ready to grab one end of a heavy box and I was going to get the other, and carry it downstairs.

But I realized that going downstairs in tandem like this was going to suck, and this box really isn’t all that heavy. So I waved the offer of the help. I’m not sure 2 months before this strength training workout if I would have done the same thing. I don’t think so.

I even stepped it up another notch when we went and got a dolly to wheel this heavy TV from their place into storage. The same thing happened, I thought it would just be easier if I just carried the tv the whole way.

I definitely surprised myself a bit, and was happy to find a practical use for all this weight training I’ve been doing :)

Hope you guys have fun this weekend!

Getting Started with Weight Training and Fitness

June 25th, 2010

I got lucky.

So now you know a little bit about me. I’ve been using weight training and fitness exercises for years. But I was barely able to achieve what I wanted to achieve. I mean, I still couldn’t’ do a pull up to save my life. That sucked.

I had been even spending a lot of money seeing a personal trainer every other week. And the guy was great. But when you only see someone once a week, you are still facing 13 days in between where you need to come up with your own routine. And so I’d definitely work on stuff and use tons of strength training workouts at home. Here’s just a sample of what my wife and I have gone through:

Home workouts

Home workouts

Two Jillian programs including 30 day shred. Dozens of different yoga, kickboxing, cardio, and weight programs.

And so two lucky things happened to me. 1 my personal trainer quit personal training. They guy moved on to chiropractor school. So now it was even more important I get a new trainer or figure out how to motivate myself to get better at weight lifting and training on my own.

So I went to Amazon looking for yet another program. :)

And found that p90x was getting a ton of great reviews. So I ordered that sucker up along with a few supplies. One band. And a pull up bar. I already had a single 35lb dumbbell at home, and a pair of dumbbells at 10lb. Not the fanciest setup of gym equipment but it’s worked out just fine. I didn’t even bother buying a yoga mat, even though there’s tons of yoga and ab exercises – a blanket on the carpet works just fine.

And that’s how it all got started just a couple months ago. That’s the crazy part too, I’ve only been doing this home workout for 2 months and I’m already banging out tons of pull ups and seeing a ton of progress physically. No, I’m not the type of person to show before and after shots of my progress (read: abs) :) But believe me, this has been terrific.

I’ll leave you with one more thing that was important for my start. I didn’t follow some strict diet program. I still drink and eat some great  (terrible for you) food. I just do it less. I make sure I have at least a day in between drinking. I also make sure I halve all my portions in restaurants. It’s not that hard to eat half. You can always eat more of the meal later. But you’ll be surprised how easy it is to lose weight just practicing some control on the portions you eat.

I’ve also been making sure I snack on nuts and seeds and  fruit more than chocolate and tortilla chips. I’ve been able to shed a ton of weight, without starving myself. And we still get to do things like grill awesome stuff outside and order pizza. I just eat it a little more cautiously.

I’ve got more stories about how this whole adventure’s been going, hope to see you back soon.

Strength Training Workouts – My Journey

June 25th, 2010

Unfortunately I spent 10 years looking for something out of all these strength training workouts. Ever since college I’ve been excercising at different gyms, boxing, seeing personal trainers, buying dvd’s of different videos to workout at home. You name it.

Don’t get me wrong. Doing those things definitely helped some of my strength, weight and fitness. But I was still not happy.

I still wanted more. Still wanted to be more comfortable going to a beach. To a water park.

There’s isn’t some kind of magic here. It’s been a bunch of work. But a manageable amount of work.

First thing’s first. p90x. This has been the program that really changed things. It’s just a very smart way to work out at home. The key is basically keep varying it up. All the time. When a trainer tells you to do this type of weight lifting on your own, good luck. It’s tough. Because it’s very unlikely you are going to create as varied of a strength training program as you really need to.

But p90x is 12 DVDs with a different things to do every day. And then every few weeks the routine changes again. They call it muscle confusion. :) Sounds fancy. But seriosuly, I’m sore constantly, because it’s changing all the time. That’s a good thing.

p90x also isn’t that much money. Especially when you consider spending time at the gym or with personal trainers. It also doesn’t take a lot of equipment. I own a few different weights and a band, but seriously, you don’t have to outfit yourself with a big set of anything. A single band is super versatile. The one piece of equipment I would recommend though is a pull up bar.

I got a pull up bar and it’s the kind that fits in the doorway without having to be installed. It works great. Yes, you can do pull up type exercises with bands, but using your own bodyweight is going to push you further.

What’s crazy is that when I started this program, I couldn’t do a single pull up. Not a single one. 2 months later. I’m banging out dozens and dozens.

It’s been a crazy little ride through fitness workouts. But I finally found some great success. And as Tony Horton says. “I hate it, but I LOVE IT.”
